Progressive group brings national organizing experience to the local level
On the first anniversary of a blow to the Buffalo progressive movement after the loss of the general election, India Walton announces the launch of RootsAction Buffalo, a program of the national organization RootsAction. RootsAction Buffalo is a project that aims to fortify local progressive coalitions, increase civic participation and amplify calls for a just and equitable city – strategically using electoral and issue campaigns as a vehicle to create lasting change.
“ Despite some losses in 2021, we had fantastic wins. We saw an incredible surge in civic engagement and had candidates to be excited about – that represented everyday Buffalonians. I’m looking forward to that again in the 2023 election cycle as we hear candidates discuss ways to address quality of life concerns, the housing crisis, and preventative legislation while looking to lessons from around the country to make Buffalo a thriving city for all of its residents, not just the wealthy. It’s time for new leadership and I think people are ready to step up.” -Kathryn Franco
“Conditions for the average Buffalonian have continued to decline: lack of city services such as snow plowing and public pools, increasing unhoused population, inadequate mental health and addiction services, etc., while slumlords take over the housing stock with little to no accountability. We need to hold our leadership accountable for addressing the quality of life issues that are hurting our community, and be ready to replace the folks who are not creating a better Buffalo for ALL residents!” – Eve Shippens
